MORE TO COME One in five strokes occurs among those 20 - 55. By 2030, Americans currently 45-64 are expected to have the highest increase in stroke. African-Americans are more impacted by stroke than any other ethnic group. Stroke prevalence is projected to increase most among Hispanic men. Already in some Southeastern states, the number of strokes occurring under 65 exceeds more than fifty percent.
STROKE BURDEN For young adult survivors, stroke means more than a medical diagnosis. Many face devastating challenges to regain independence and to resume professional and family roles. Physical challenges. Societal prejudices. Parenting obstacles. Cognitive dysfunction. Prescription medications. School work. Long-term care expenses. Mobility. Employment discrimination. Respite care exclusion. Limited rehabilitation. These are issues dominating their daily routines.
